Cutting-Edge Application | In-Situ Rapid Determination of Crude Oil SARA Fractions by Low-Field NMR Relaxometry
This study demonstrates the use of low‑field NMR relaxometry for rapid, in‑situ determination of SARA fractions (saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes) in crude oils. Compared to the conventional ASTM D 4124 column chromatography method, LF‑NMR requires no solvents or sample fractionation, preserves the native crude oil colloidal structure, and delivers results within minutes. By analyzing T₂ relaxation signals, the technique effectively distinguishes asphaltenes, resins, and the combined saturates + aromatics fraction. Correlation with ASTM reference data confirms its reliability across a wide range of crude oil types (API 4.6–42.0°). While it cannot separately quantify saturates and aromatics individually, it offers a fast, low‑cost, and non‑destructive alternative for oilfield screening, heavy oil evaluation, and asphaltene stability assessment.
