A New Method for Measuring Fiber Moisture Regain: Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Technique

Moisture regain is a key indicator of how much moisture fiber materials can absorb. It directly affects the physical and mechanical properties of the fiber—such as tensile strength, elongation, electrical resistance, specific gravity—as well as its performance in textile processing.

Currently, the most commonly used method for measuring moisture regain in fiber materials is the oven-drying method. In this technique, the oven is preheated to a fixed temperature and maintained throughout the process. A pre-weighed wet fiber sample is placed into the oven, where moisture is gradually evaporated into the hot air. The oven’s ventilation system helps remove this moist air continuously, allowing complete drying of the fiber sample.

However, the oven-drying method has several drawbacks:

Poor repeatability.
