The 12th National Seminar on Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Technology and Applications, hosted by the NMR Instrument Expert Group of the Analytical Instrument Branch of the Chinese Society for Instrumentation and organized by Suzhou Niumai Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd., was successfully held in Suzhou from October 19 to 21, 2023.
This year’s seminar focused on theoretical approaches, methodologies, and technologies related to low-field NMR time domain, magnetic resonance imaging, and other NMR-related areas, as well as applications in energy and geotechnical engineering, life sciences, food and agriculture, and polymer materials.
Over 100 experts, young scholars, and students in the field of magnetic resonance from prestigious universities, research institutes, and enterprises, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, China University of Petroleum, China University of Geosciences, China University of Mining and Technology, China Agricultural University, University of Science and Technology of China, Southwest Petroleum University, East China Normal University, Nanjing Forestry University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Jilin University, Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Agro-Products Processing, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and China Petroleum Logging Co., Ltd. attended the event.

During the opening ceremony, Academician Lin Jun, Dean of the School of Earth Sciences at Jilin University, shared the latest research on geomagnetic field NMR detection technology, explaining the basic principles of geomagnetic field effects and how to use it for logging to explore and develop formation physical parameters.


Additionally, the seminar hosted the launch ceremony for the provincial “Mobile Full-Diameter NMR Core Analysis System” project and the unveiling of Niumai Analytical as a newly recognized National “Specialized, Refined, Unique, and Innovative” Small Giant Enterprise.

After more than two years of technological development, Niumai Analytical successfully localized the Mobile Full-Diameter NMR Core Analysis System, which also received funding from this year’s Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Special Fund.
In addition to receiving provincial funding, Niumai Analytical was selected as part of the fifth batch of National “Specialized, Refined, Unique, and Innovative” Small Giant Enterprises, reflecting the company’s recognized innovation and competitive strength.
After the opening ceremony, Mr. Song Changbao, Deputy Secretary of the High-Tech Zone Party Committee and Director of the Management Committee, met with Academician Lin Jun and Advisor Yan Chengde for in-depth discussions on the development of the scientific instrumentation cluster.
The seminar featured a lively atmosphere, with experts and scholars sharing the latest applications of low-field NMR across diverse fields, presenting research outcomes and experiences, creating a rich audio-visual experience for attendees.

Senior Engineer, Tsinghua University & President of the Spectroscopy Branch, Beijing Society for Physical and Chemical Analysis – Yang Haijun
The conference presentations kicked off with Mr. Yang Haijun from Tsinghua University Chemistry/Analysis Center. As a familiar face, he summarized Niumai’s journey at Tsinghua in three words: “Cross, Integrate, Innovate,” highlighting the company’s path from inception, collaboration, training, to independent R&D at Tsinghua.

Dr. Wang Yuchun, VP, Anji Microelectronics Technology
Dr. Wang Yuchun, VP of Anji Microelectronics, shared insights into the challenges of developing high-end scientific instruments. He discussed low-field NMR applications in semiconductor wet processing, inspiring the audience with a message of resilience and innovation.

Professor-Level Senior Engineer, Sinopec Petroleum Engineering Technology Research Institute – Wang Zhizhan
Dr. Wang Zhizhan, Chief Technical Expert at Sinopec Petroleum Engineering Technology Research Institute, illustrated the use of Niumai’s low-field NMR as the “eyes” for logging under extreme sample conditions, showcasing successful technology transformation achievements.

International Standard Committee Particle Characterization Expert – Xu Renliang
Expert Xu Renliang highlighted the relevance of particle characterization, referencing the 2023 Nobel Prizes in Physiology/Medicine and Chemistry. He praised Niumai’s instruments for determining the specific surface area of particles in liquids, filling a key industry gap.

Dr. Tang Xiaoyan, Deputy Director & Researcher, Institute of Agricultural Quality Standards and Testing, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences
Dr. Tang Xiaoyan shared her team’s work on standardizing low-field NMR for livestock and poultry meat analysis, detailing the Ministry of Agriculture’s review and promotion process. She highly praised Niumai instruments, summarizing five key advantages: fast detection, ease of use, high sensitivity, stability, and environmental safety.

Associate Professor Shao Xiaolong, a long-time user of Niumai instruments in education and research, fondly recalled mentoring the first PhD graduate trained on Niumai low-field NMR. He continues to embody the spirit of innovation and high standards shared by Niumai.
To provide a platform for young researchers, especially graduate students, the conference included a student presentation session. Participants had the chance to showcase their research progress and receive feedback from experts, enhancing academic insight, broadening perspectives, and strengthening research capabilities.

The 12th National Seminar on Low-Field NMR Technology and Applications concluded successfully. Over two days, participants explored applications and developments in low-field NMR, sharing the latest research and technological advancements.
Through outstanding presentations and discussions, attendees learned that low-field NMR has advanced significantly in recent years and its applications across industries are expanding. In material science, low-field NMR enables detailed studies of microstructure and properties, supporting new material development. In life sciences, it allows rapid, accurate, and quantitative measurement of fat, lean mass, and body fluids in awake small animals, aiding disease modeling and drug research.
The conference highlighted that low-field NMR applications thrive on interdisciplinary collaboration. Solving complex challenges requires experts to share knowledge and resources, driving technological innovation and creating opportunities across industries.
The successful seminar has not only boosted the high-quality development of low-field NMR applications but also allowed Niumai to better understand industry trends and market needs, providing insights for product innovation.
